Ingredients

Protein

  • 1 fillet tilapia fillet (about 6 oz)

Sauces and liquids

  • 2 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tbsp honey (or brown sugar)
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp mirin (optional, for classic teriyaki vibe)
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp water (to mix with cornstarch)
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil

Aromatics

  • 1 small garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, finely grated

Cooking oils

  • 1 tsp neutral oil for the skillet (avocado, canola, or light olive)

Garnishes and serving

  • 1 green onion thinly sliced (for garnish)
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • 1 lime wedge optional, for a bright finish
  • 1 cup cooked rice (for serving, optional)
  • 1 cup steamed vegetable, like broccoli or snap pea (for serving, optional)

Instructions 

  • Minced garlic and grated ginger finely.
  • Whisk soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, mirin, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger in a saucepan over medium heat.
  • Mix cornstarch with water, then whisk into the sauce; simmer 2-3 minutes until shiny and slightly thickened.
  • Pat fish dry, season lightly, then cook in a heated skillet with oil for 2-3 minutes per side until opaque and golden.
  • Brush fish with glaze, let bubble briefly, then garnish with sesame seeds and green onion. Serve over rice with vegetables and lime.
