Ingredients

Vegetables

  • 10 ounces frozen chopped spinach
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (plus more for the pan)
  • 1 pound lean ground beef (85/15)
  • 1 small onion (chopped; 4 ounces)
  • 1 teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 cup marinara sauce
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese (part-skim, shredded; 3 ounces)

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch baking dish.
  • Defrost and drain spinach. Cook beef, onion, and salt until browned, then add garlic and marinara. Remove from heat.
  • Mix softened cream cheese, egg, pepper, salt, and spinach until smooth. Layer spinach mixture, meat, and cheese in dish.
  • Bake for 30 minutes until bubbly and browned. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use fresh spinach for best flavor. Adjust cooking time if using different dish sizes.
