A delicious homemade version of the popular Mongolian Beef, featuring tender beef strips in a savory, sweet sauce with green onions and sesame seeds.

Ingredients

Meat

  • 1-2 pounds beef (cut into strips, flank steak or stir fry beef strips)
  • 4 green onions green onions (chopped)
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon corn starch
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 4 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1 cup soy sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 ⅔ cups brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cold water
  • 1 ½ tablespoons corn starch

for serving

  • sesame seeds sesame seeds
  • rice rice (for serving)

Instructions 

  • Whisk marinade ingredients, coat beef, and chill 1 hour.
  • Combine sesame oil, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, water, and brown sugar; heat until sugar dissolves.
  • Mix cornstarch and water; add to sauce and cook until thickened.
  • Cook beef in a skillet until done, then add sauce and cook 1-2 minutes.
  • Serve over rice, garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

Adjust sauce amount to taste for more or less saucy beef.
