Ingredients

Dry ingredients

  • 141 g all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • 8 g cocoa powder, Dutch process
  • 0.75 tsp baking powder
  • 0.125 tsp baking soda
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 70 g unsalted butter, softened
  • 150 g granulated white sugar
  • 1 egg egg, at room temperature
  • 1 egg yolk egg yolk, at room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 120 ml buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 1.5 tsp red gel food coloring

Frosting ingredients

  • 112 g unsalted butter, softened
  • 114 g cream cheese, cold
  • 260 g powdered sugar

Sprinkles for decorating (optional)

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with liners.
  • Mix dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, yolk, vanilla, and food coloring; mix well.
  • Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the batter, starting and ending with dry ingredients. Fill liners 2/3 full.
  • Bake for 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool completely.
  • Beat butter, cream cheese, and powdered sugar until smooth. Frost cooled cupcakes and decorate with sprinkles.
