Instructions
Prepare the crust by mixing flour, sugar, and salt, then cut in cold butter until crumbly. Chill the dough.
Roll out the dough and fit into a baking pan. Spread apples, caramel sauce, brown sugar, salt, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg over the crust.
Sprinkle cornstarch and vanilla over the filling, then cover with the top crust or lattice. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle coarse sugar.
Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45 minutes until golden and bubbly. Let cool slightly before serving with vanilla ice cream.
Notes
For best results, use a mix of tart and sweet apples for a balanced flavor.
