Ingredients

Cookies

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp fine sea salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp almond extract (optional)

Icing

  • 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 3–4 tbsp milk (or water), plus more as needed
  • 1½–2 tbsp light corn syrup
  • tsp vanilla extract (or 1 tsp vanilla + ½ tsp almond extract)

Decorations

Instructions 

  • Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Beat butter and sugar until light. Mix in egg and extracts. Add dry ingredients in parts, then chill dough 1–2 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 175°C / 350°F. Roll out dough, cut into hearts, and place on baking sheets.
  • Bake 8–11 minutes until edges are golden. Cool completely.
  • Mix powdered sugar, milk, corn syrup, vanilla, and salt for icing. Tint with gel colors. Pipe outlines and flood centers. Decorate with sprinkles.
  • Let cookies dry several hours or overnight before stacking.

Notes

Chill dough well for easier cutting and shaping.
